The Adler Apotheke (Eagle Pharmacy) sits on the Ostenhellweg, the pedestrian street running through the historic centre, and has been dispensing medicines since the fourteenth century. The current neo-Gothic facade is a handsome piece of nineteenth-century commercial architecture, and the interior, still operating as a working pharmacy, retains period fittings and display cases.
It is not a museum, and you cannot simply wander inside for a look — but the exterior and the history are worth noting as you pass along the Hellweg. The pharmacy publishes a brief history of the building that is available inside. For anyone interested in the layers of the city that survived postwar rebuilding, this small continuity is significant: almost nothing else in central Dortmund predates 1945.
