Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist

The Propsteikirche is the main Catholic parish church of central Dortmund, standing on Propsteistrasse just west of the Marktplatz. Its origins go back to the Dominican order, who founded a church here in the thirteenth century; the building that stands today is a postwar reconstruction in a stripped modernist style, with the deliberate visual incompleteness of its tower serving as an architectural act of remembrance.

The interior is quieter and more contemplative than the older Protestant churches nearby. A few salvaged medieval fragments — carved stonework, a small altarpiece — are incorporated into the new space as traces of what was lost. The church functions as an active parish and is open to visitors outside of services.

A story
The current Propsteikirche was built between 1962 and 1967 as a replacement for the medieval church destroyed in the war. The architect Gottfried Böhm designed the tower as a deliberate fragment — it was built to look unfinished, a permanent reminder of the destruction. Böhm later won the Pritzker Prize in 1986, the first German architect to do so.
