Deusenberg is one of the Ruhr's better examples of industrial ground being turned into public landscape. The former spoil heap rises above the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Deusen, with paths that climb through grass and scrub to broad views across Dortmund's northern edge.
It is best treated as an active stop rather than a manicured park. Cyclists come for the mountain-bike course, walkers for the climb and the open skyline, and anyone interested in the Ruhr gets a tangible reminder of how much of the region's scenery has been reshaped by mining and steel.
