Saxon Railway Museum (Schauplatz Eisenbahn)

Locomotives and rolling stock from the Saxon railway network, on an active heritage site

The Saxon Railway Museum occupies a former locomotive depot in the Hilbersdorf district in the northeast of the city, one of the few surviving round-house engine sheds in Saxony. The collection focuses on Saxon and East German railway history, with a particular strength in narrow-gauge material.

Opening times are limited — the museum runs regular event weekends rather than daily opening, so check before you go. On steam days the yard operates as a working shed, with engines under steam and staff who know their locomotives. It's an experience that rewards anyone with more than a passing interest in railways, and is surprisingly engaging even for those who arrive sceptical.

A story
Saxony had one of the most extensive narrow-gauge railway networks in Europe — the famous Saxon narrow-gauge railways that wound through the Erzgebirge and the Elbsandsteingebirge. The museum preserves locomotives and carriages from this network alongside standard-gauge material. On open days, steam engines run in the yard — the smell and noise of a working steam depot, not a glass-case display.
