Händel-Haus

The yellow town house on the Grosse Nikolaistrasse is the building where George Frideric Handel was born and spent his first 17 years. He left for Hamburg, then London, and never came back; but the city has owned the building since 1948 and turned it into the major museum on his life and work.

The collection includes period instruments, autograph scores, paintings, and a permanent display on the music of Handel's contemporaries. The little concert hall in the courtyard puts on regular performances. Every June the Handel Festival fills the city with concerts. The audio guide is excellent.

A story
George Frideric Handel was born in this house on 23 February 1685, the son of a town barber-surgeon. His father wanted him to become a lawyer and discouraged him from music — Handel reportedly hid a clavichord in the attic to practise in secret.
