June is the headline month: the Handel Festival (Händel-Festspiele) brings concerts, opera, and a city full of music for about two weeks. Hotels fill up, but it is the most rewarding time to visit, particularly for opera-goers. The Laternenfest in late August floats hundreds of paper lanterns down the Saale on a warm summer evening — a quintessential Halle scene.
Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant; the riverside walks are at their best. Winters are grey and cold but the Christmas market on the Marktplatz, framed by the five towers, is the city at its most photogenic.
