Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen

The Marktkirche, also called the Marienkirche, gives Halle its signature skyline. Two pairs of towers — the older Hausmannstürme to the west and the bright blue-roofed twin towers to the east — frame a single Late Gothic hall church. Together with the free-standing Red Tower, they make up the famous Fünf Türme, the five towers seen on every postcard of the city.

Inside, the church holds a Reformation-era altar with paintings from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder, the funeral mask of Martin Luther (taken in nearby Eisleben), and a fine pulpit. The composer George Frideric Handel was baptised here; Bach played the organ. The west towers can be climbed for a close-up view of the rooftops.

A story
Halle's market church was created by joining two older churches back to back in the 1530s — the architects kept the western towers of one and the eastern towers of the other and built a new nave between them. That is why the church has four towers, two pairs of different ages standing only metres apart.
