Halle's market square is one of the great urban set-pieces of central Germany. The four-tower Marktkirche and the free-standing Roter Turm sit side by side at its centre — a uniquely concentrated cityscape. The Marktbrunnen fountain, with its statue of Handel, looks out from the south side; he is shown holding a manuscript and looking, depending on the angle, either lost in thought or mildly annoyed.
There is a daily market (mornings, Tuesday to Saturday). In December the square hosts the Christmas market — modest by Dresden standards but pleasantly local.
