A long, thin island in the Saale river just north of the old town, given over to parkland, sports fields, and an open-air swimming pool. It is the city's favourite warm-weather hangout: locals come with picnic blankets, students bring beer, and the miniature railway loops the perimeter.
A wooden footbridge connects the island to the riverside path, which makes a pleasant 30-minute walk from the centre. In summer there are open-air concerts at the music shell.
