Venetian Harbour

The harbour is the heart of Fiskardo — a curved quay of restored Venetian and pre-earthquake architecture that makes this the most photogenic village on Cephalonia. The old stone buildings lining the waterfront, with their terracotta roofs and faded paint, have been carefully converted into taverns, boutiques, and small guesthouses. In summer the quay fills with expensive yachts; out of season it reverts to something quieter and more authentic.

Walking along the waterfront in the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, you get the best sense of the village. The Venetian lighthouse ruins are a short walk north along the coast path, and the Byzantine museum (small but well-curated) is worth half an hour.

A story
Fiskardo is the only village in Cephalonia to survive the catastrophic earthquake of August 1953 largely intact. The reason is geological: the village sits on limestone bedrock that absorbed the seismic shock rather than amplifying it. Everywhere else on the island was destroyed. The preservation was accidental but is now the reason Fiskardo looks the way it does — a living record of what all of Cephalonia once looked like.
