The same sandstone pillars that drew Byzantine monks now draw climbers from across Europe. The Meteora offers hundreds of established routes across the main rocks, ranging from moderate sport climbing to serious traditional multi-pitch routes on the big walls. The rock is a conglomerate — a mass of rounded river pebbles compressed into stone — which gives it an unusual texture and demands precise footwork.
Climbing is not permitted on the rocks that carry active monasteries, but there are plenty of other pillars in the complex. Local guiding companies based in Kalambaka and the adjacent village of Kastraki run half-day and full-day climbing courses for beginners as well as guided routes for experienced climbers. The season runs from April through November; summer mornings are best before the heat builds. A climbing shop in town rents equipment.
