Meteora Sunset Viewpoint

The best viewpoint for sunset over the Meteora rocks and the Thessaly plain

The road that loops through the Meteora complex passes several viewpoints, but the best for sunset sits above Kastraki and looks back across the full spread of rocks toward the setting sun. The light turns the sandstone orange and then deep red, and the shadows thrown by the pillars stretch across the valley floor. In summer, a small crowd gathers here each evening; arrive thirty minutes before sunset to claim a spot.

The viewpoint is accessible by car, by bike hired in Kalambaka, or on foot via the main hiking trail. If you walk, the route from Kastraki takes about forty minutes uphill. Some visitors combine the sunset viewpoint with the afternoon opening of Varlaam or the Great Meteoron, timing the monastery visit for 3–5pm and the sunset for 7–8pm in summer.
