Folklore Museum of Katerini

The Folklore Museum of Katerini is in the centre of town near the Municipal Park, housed in a building belonging to the Pieria Pontic Association. The museum focuses on the cultural heritage of the Pontic Greeks — the communities expelled from the Black Sea coast of Anatolia as part of the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Many of these refugees were resettled in Macedonia and Pieria, and their descendants form a significant part of Katerini's population.

The collection includes traditional costumes, woven textiles, agricultural implements, household furniture, and photographs documenting life in the Pontic villages before 1923. For visitors interested in the Greek refugee experience — one of the largest forced population movements of the 20th century — this is a good introduction. The museum is small and can be seen in about an hour. Opening hours are limited; check locally as they vary.

A story
The Folklore Museum of Katerini was established by the Pieria Pontic Association — a society representing the descendants of Greek refugees expelled from Pontus (the Black Sea coast of Anatolia) in the 1923 population exchange. The collection documents the material culture these communities brought with them: textiles, household objects, traditional costumes, and photographs from the pre-1923 Pontic Greek world that no longer exists.
