Mount Olympus

Greece's highest peak and mythological home of the gods

The mythological home of the Greek gods and, at 2,918 m, the highest mountain in Greece — a genuinely alpine massif of limestone ridges, deep gorges and 52 separate peaks. The standard ascent starts from the village of Litochoro, about 20 km south of Katerini, and climbs through the spectacular Enipeas Gorge to the Spilios Agapitos refuge (2,100 m), then on to the summit (Mytikas) the next morning. Most of the walking is within a Greek national park and many of the slopes can be hiked without any technical gear — the final scramble to the very top requires a head for heights.
