Eating Out

Metsovite food is unambiguously mountain food: slow-cooked meat, savoury pies, smoked cheese, and quantities of red wine. The signature local product is Metsovone, a smoked pasta filata cheese unique to the area, usually served grilled or in saganaki. Other things to try are kontosouvli (slow-roasted pork on a spit), prosfaï (a Vlach lamb-and-rice stew), and pita zimaropita — a Pindos pie of thin layered pastry with cheese, leek, or chicken.

Most tavernas open from about 12 noon, close in the afternoon, and reopen in the evening. Almost everywhere in Metsovo serves the local Katogi Averoff wine by the glass and the carafe.
