Metsovo is small enough to walk in an hour, but rewards a slower visit. The two essential stops are the Averoff Gallery for nineteenth- and twentieth-century Greek painting, and the Tossizza Folklore Museum for a vivid reconstruction of how a well-off Metsovite family lived. The central Platía with its plane tree and the surrounding lanes of slate-roofed houses are themselves worth a couple of leisurely passes.
Outside town, the Katogi Averoff winery, the small Karakoli ski resort and the surrounding Pindos forest all repay a half-day excursion. The Katara Pass road up to the watershed, with its view east into Thessaly, is one of the most dramatic short drives in mainland Greece.
