Lion of Bavaria

The Lion of Bavaria lies on the slope of a low hill at the eastern edge of Nafplio, a colossal figure of a sleeping lion hewn directly from the natural rock. It is easy to miss — there is no fence, no ticket office, just a path through the trees off Sidiras Merarchias Street.

The monument is fifteen minutes' walk from the old town and rewards the detour with a sense of how Nafplio was once the unlikely capital of a new European kingdom. Combine with a stroll along the seafront promenade towards the suburb of Pronoia.

A story
Carved straight out of a roadside boulder in 1840 by the Bavarian sculptor Christian Siegel, the sleeping lion commemorates the Bavarian soldiers brought to Greece with King Otto who died in a typhoid epidemic. The same sculptor went on to carve the more famous Lion of Lucerne in Switzerland.
