Ottoman Fountains

Scattered around the old town, often built into walls or set behind iron grilles, are a dozen Ottoman public fountains, most dating from the second Turkish occupation (1715–1822). The largest is in Plapouta Square; smaller ones are tucked behind churches, on side streets, and at intersections where the slope of the rock made it easy to tap into spring water.

Few are still flowing, but the carved marble spouts, calligraphic inscriptions and shell-shaped basins are worth seeking out. They are the most concentrated reminder that this was a Turkish town for longer than it has been a Greek one.
