Olive Grove Walks

The whole interior of Paxi is olive grove — perhaps 250,000 trees in all, planted in close stands and rising over old dry-stone terracing. A network of paths and unsealed tracks runs between them, much of it well marked, and the cool of the trees makes walking pleasant even in summer.

Maps are available from the tourist office in Gaios. A good loop runs from Lakka up to the Eremitis cliff lookout (sunset is the time), through the village of Magazia and back along the ridge. Wear closed shoes; the dry stone walls hide small lizards but occasionally a viper.

A story
The Paxos olive trees are unusually old — many are 500 years or more, with trunks pulled into knots and spirals by centuries of selective pruning. Some of the older trees are believed to date from the Venetian period.
