West Coast Caves and Cliffs

The west side of Paxi is a single 12 km wall of white sea cliffs, dropping straight into deep blue water and pocked with sea caves and arches. Boat trips run from all three villages, lasting two or three hours and visiting the main caves — Ortholithos (a sea-stack), Tripitos (a natural arch), and the cathedral-like Ipapanti cave at the southern end.

The water is up to 60 metres deep right at the cliff base, and the larger boats with glass bottoms or open swim platforms let you slide in for a snorkel. Small dinghies with outboards can be hired in Gaios or Lakka if you would rather explore on your own — easy water if you stay close to the coast.

A story
The largest of the caves — Ipapanti — has a vaulted ceiling roughly the size of a cathedral nave and is rumoured to have sheltered a Greek submarine during the Second World War. The local boatmen do not always volunteer the story unless you ask.
