Bük is a small village of about 3,000 people in western Hungary, close to the Austrian border between Szombathely and Sopron. It is known almost exclusively for its thermal baths, which rank among the best in a country that takes thermal bathing seriously.
The Bükfürdő thermal spa complex is the main attraction. The mineral-rich thermal water, tapped from deep underground, is classified as medicinal and draws visitors from across Hungary and neighbouring Austria. The complex includes indoor and outdoor pools, a water park, and a medical treatment centre. The setting is quiet and well-maintained, surrounded by parkland.
Beyond the baths, Bük is a pleasant if unremarkable village in gentle countryside. There is an 18-hole golf course, fishing on the River Répce, and easy access to the forested hills of the Alpokalja region. Sopron, with its beautifully preserved medieval centre, is about 45 kilometres northwest.
