Café Gerbeaud

Occupying pride of place on Vorosmarty ter since 1858, Gerbeaud is Budapest's most famous coffeehouse and a monument to old-world Central European cafe culture. The interior is all chandeliers, marble tables, dark wood panelling, and gilded ceilings — the kind of place where you half-expect to see Habsburg-era officers lingering over a newspaper. The cakes and pastries are the main draw, particularly the Dobos torte and the house-recipe Gerbeaud slice, a layered confection of walnut, apricot jam, and dark chocolate. Prices reflect the grand setting, and service can be formal to a fault. Come once for the spectacle, then find a neighbourhood kavehaz for your daily coffee.
