The New York Cafe is the most opulent coffeehouse in Budapest, and possibly in all of Europe. Originally opened in 1894, it was a gathering place for writers and intellectuals. The interior is pure fin-de-siecle excess: gilded columns, frescoes, crystal chandeliers, and marble everywhere. Now part of the Anantara hotel, it draws mostly tourists, and prices match the setting. Worth visiting once for the spectacle, even if the coffee is secondary to the surroundings.
