Újbuda

Újbuda — District XI, spreading across the southern Buda side of the river — is the city's artsy, emerging quarter, greener and more relaxed than the Pest centre across the water. Long a student and university district, it has grown into one of Budapest's most creative corners without losing its unpolished, lived-in feel.

The heart of it is Bartók Béla Boulevard (Bartók Béla út), a long avenue lined with independent galleries, craft coffee roasters, design shops, and easygoing wine bars — the kind of street where an old literary café sits next to a contemporary art space. The district runs down to the Danube, where the A38, a converted Ukrainian cargo ship, has become one of the city's best-loved concert venues. Inland, the Feneketlen-tó ("Bottomless Lake") anchors a quiet park, and the grand Gellért Baths sit at the district's northern edge below Gellért Hill.

It rewards aimless wandering more than a checklist. Come for the boulevard's cafes and galleries, then drift down to the river for a drink on the water.
