Kopcsik Marcipánia is a marzipan museum and confectionery in Eger's old town, dedicated to the extraordinary sculptural work of master confectioner Lajos Kopcsik. The collection contains over 150 sculptures, stained glass windows, and recreations of famous artworks, all rendered in almond-paste marzipan. The craftsmanship is remarkable: pieces that from a distance look like oil paintings or ceramic sculptures reveal themselves on closer inspection to be made entirely of sweets.
The museum is small, sweet-smelling, and entirely charming. It is one of those peculiarly central European institutions — part craft tradition, part folk art, part confectionery shop — that you would not find anywhere else. The shop sells excellent marzipan to take away. Children are captivated; adults who expected kitsch are usually surprised.
