Belgrade Cathedral

The seat of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Buda, on Templom Hill

Address Pátriárka utca 5

The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos, usually called the Belgrade Cathedral, sits on the small rise just east of Fő tér. Built in the 1750s, it is the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Buda — the senior church of the half-dozen surviving Serbian churches in Szentendre.

The interior holds a richly carved Baroque iconostasis with paintings by Vasilije Ostojić. Outside, the churchyard collects worn 18th-century gravestones with Cyrillic inscriptions, leaning at various angles. The Serbian Ecclesiastical Art Collection housed in adjacent buildings displays icons, vestments, manuscripts, and liturgical objects gathered from churches across the eparchy — worth visiting in combination with the cathedral itself.

A story
When the Serbian patriarch led tens of thousands of refugees north from Kosovo in the 1690s, Szentendre became their seat in exile. The cathedral they built here served as the mother church of Serbian Orthodoxy in Hungary, and the Eparchy of Buda is still based at this address today.
