Preobraženska Church

Serbian Orthodox church of the Tabakovići guild, on Bogdányi utca

Address Bogdányi utca 40

The Preobraženska, or Transfiguration Church, was built between 1741 and 1746 by the local Serbian tanners' guild — the Tabakovići — whose money paid for the unusually fine Rococo iconostasis inside. It stands at the north end of Bogdányi utca, the street that runs along the old Serbian quarter.

The church holds the annual Serbian festival of Pentecost, the only day of the year when the inside is reliably open to the public. The rest of the time you can usually peer through the iron gates of the churchyard. The tower's blue dome is a useful landmark when finding your way back to Fő tér through the tangle of narrow streets.
