Santa Maria dei Servi

Gothic church on Strada Maggiore with a beautiful arcaded forecourt

Santa Maria dei Servi sits on Strada Maggiore behind a four-sided portico — a Gothic cloister opening onto the street. The interior is tall, brick, and unusually atmospheric, with the polygonal apse glowing in the late afternoon.

The church holds Cimabue's Madonna Enthroned (the Maestà), an early thirteenth-century Byzantine-style panel that is one of the few works securely attributed to the artist outside Florence and Assisi. The arcaded forecourt, used as a market square in the Middle Ages, is one of the few open public spaces along Strada Maggiore — a nice spot to break a walk through the eastern half of the old centre.
