Misano Adriatico

Romagna beach town with a quieter Adriatic shore and a major motorcycle racing circuit.

Misano Adriatico sits at the southern edge of the Romagna coast, where the Adriatic Riviera gives way to Marche. The three kilometres of sandy beach here are quieter than Rimini to the north or Cattolica to the south, making it a reasonable base if you want coast without the crowds.

The town has two distinct draws. The Misano World Circuit at Santa Monica hosts major national and international motorcycle racing events, including MotoGP rounds — if you are a motorsport fan, this alone may be reason enough to visit. The circuit also offers track days for cars and motorcycles when racing is not scheduled.

The Porto Verde marina on the southern edge of town is the other anchor. It accommodates over a thousand pleasure boats and has a pleasant harbour-front strip of bars and restaurants. It is a good place to spend an evening regardless of whether you arrived by sea.

Beaches

The beach at Misano Adriatico is the typical Adriatic setup: fine sand, shallow water that warms up quickly in summer, and rows of private lido operators renting out sunbeds and umbrellas. The water is calm and safe for children.

Most of the beach is managed by private concessions (stabilimenti balneari), so you will pay for a spot. A small stretch of free beach (spiaggia libera) exists but fills up fast in August. The water gets crowded during peak summer weeks; May, June, and September offer a more relaxed experience with the sea still warm enough to swim.

The Porto Verde area at the southern end of town has a somewhat different character — the marina rather than the open beach is the focus there, and it tends to attract a slightly older crowd.

Getting There

The nearest airport is Rimini Federico Fellini International Airport (RMI), about 18 km north, with seasonal connections to several European cities. Bologna airport (BLQ) is about 120 km away and has more year-round international routes.

By train, the closest station is Cattolica–Misano–Gabicce, served by regional trains on the Bologna–Ancona Adriatic coast line. From Rimini it is about 20 minutes; from Bologna, just over an hour. The station is around 3 km from the town centre, reachable by bus or taxi.

By road, the A14 Autostrada Adriatica runs just inland — exit at Cattolica and it is a short drive north to Misano. The SS16 coastal road also connects the resort strip running from Rimini down through Riccione, Cattolica, and Misano without using the motorway.

Things to Do

Misano Adriatico's main draws are the Misano World Circuit for motorsport visitors and the beach for everyone else. The Porto Verde marina at the southern end of town is the most pleasant part of the waterfront for an evening walk and a meal. Beyond these, the town functions primarily as a beach resort — the pier, the lungomare, and the beach establishments are the daily rhythm of the place from June to September.

For those with a car, Gradara Castle (a perfectly preserved medieval fortress about 10 km south) makes a good half-day outing. Rimini is 18 km north and has an old city worth exploring — the Tempio Malatestiano, the arch of Augustus, and a Roman bridge all within walking distance of each other.
