House of the Shells

A small but genuinely strange domestic monument in the Marina Centro area: a private house whose owner covered every external surface with shells. There is nothing official about it, no entrance fee, no plaque — you just turn into a side street and there it is.

It takes ten minutes to look at and another ten to decide whether it is folk art or an obsessive's hobby. Either way, it is the kind of detail that makes Rimini more than just a beach.

A story
A retired taxi driver, Romano Ascani, spent decades pressing seashells into the plaster of his small house on Via Roma until every square inch — walls, gateposts, even the dustbin — was encrusted. He kept gathering them from the local beaches until shortly before his death. The house is still maintained by the family as a quiet roadside curiosity.
