The Mausoleo di Augusto is the enormous tomb built for Emperor Augustus in 28 BC, once a ring-shaped monument covered by an earth mound and cypresses. Members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty were buried here, making it one of the most politically charged monuments of imperial Rome.
The site has had a rough afterlife as fortress, ruin, and fenced-off relic, but its scale and history still make it an important stop around Campo Marzio, especially when paired with the Ara Pacis nearby.
