Milan's museum of 20th-century Italian art, housed in the modernist Palazzo dell'Arengario on Piazza del Duomo — connected by a bridge to the Palazzo Reale next door. The collection is strong on the major Italian movements of the last century: Futurism, the Novecento, Arte Povera, and beyond.

The opening room, containing Umberto Boccioni's masterworks and a spectacular view of the Duomo through a curved glass window, is one of the most memorable museum experiences in Milan. The collection continues through major works by De Chirico, Morandi, Lucio Fontana, and Piero Manzoni. Seriously underrated by international visitors who focus on the big Renaissance collections.

A story
The museum occupies the Palazzo dell'Arengario — a fascist-era building that Mussolini used for speeches from a balcony overlooking Piazza del Duomo. The building's grim political history and the modern art it now contains make for an unexpected juxtaposition.
