A small church tucked into a corner of central Milan with an extraordinary secret: a chapel whose walls are entirely encrusted with human bones. Skulls line the upper registers; femurs and tibias form geometric patterns below; the vaulted ceiling is a mosaic of bones and skulls arranged into elaborate patterns. The effect is macabre but genuinely beautiful.
Entry is free and the place is remarkably little-visited given its proximity to the Duomo (about five minutes' walk). Worth seeking out, especially for anyone who has already covered the main museums and wants something genuinely different.
