San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore

San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is one of Milan's great surprises: a Renaissance church whose walls are almost completely covered in frescoes. Bernardino Luini and his workshop painted much of the interior, filling the chapels and choir screen with saints, patrons, landscapes, and soft Lombard colour.

The church belonged to a Benedictine convent, and the split between the public nave and the nuns' choir is still easy to read. It is close to the Archaeological Museum and Santa Maria delle Grazie, but it feels much less crowded than Milan's headline sights.
