Termoli is a small Adriatic port town on the Molise coast — one of the few places along this stretch of coastline with a proper historic centre. The Borgo Vecchio sits on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the sea, a tight knot of medieval lanes with the Castello Svevo (built by Frederick II in 1247) at its tip and a Romanesque cathedral that blends Norman, Byzantine, and later elements. It gets crowded on summer weekends, especially with Italian families, but out of season it is quiet and atmospheric.
The beaches north and south of town are good, and the town makes an excellent base for the Tremiti Islands — ferries run regularly from the port in summer.
