Otranto is a good base for exploring the southern Salento. Lecce, the baroque capital of the region, is about an hour inland and worth a full day on its own. The drive south along the coast toward Santa Maria di Leuca passes Castro and the dramatic Grotta Zinzulusa sea cave. Inland, Galatina has the extraordinary frescoed church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria.
