Getting There

Otranto sits at the end of the small Ferrovie del Sud Est line from Lecce, about 80 minutes by train. The line is single-track and trains are infrequent — fewer than ten a day, with long gaps in the afternoon — but the journey through the olive groves of the southern Salento is part of the experience.

By road it is about an hour from Lecce on the SS16 or via the coast on the SS611, the latter much slower but far more scenic past Roca Vecchia and the Alimini lakes. The nearest airport is Brindisi (about 100 km), with car hire and a direct shuttle bus to Lecce.

In summer there is a passenger ferry to Vlorë in Albania with European Seaways, useful for travellers continuing south through the Balkans.
