Church of San Pietro

Tiny Byzantine church with surviving medieval frescoes in the old town

A small cross-in-square Byzantine church tucked into the lanes of the historic centre, San Pietro is one of the oldest buildings in Otranto — its core probably dates to the 9th or 10th century, when the city was still under Byzantine rule. The interior preserves several layers of fresco from the 10th to the 15th centuries, including a striking Last Supper.

Opening hours are erratic and the church is often locked. When the door is open it is worth a few minutes — the dim interior, the surviving Greek inscriptions, and the patches of saintly faces emerging from whitewash give a stronger sense of Otranto's Byzantine past than any of the bigger sights.
