Cala di Volpe

Cala di Volpe is the narrow, hooked bay south of Porto Cervo around which Jacques Couelle designed the eponymous hotel — a deliberately rustic, granite-and-stucco hotel that opened in 1963 and is still one of the most photographed buildings on the Costa Smeralda. The beach at the head of the bay is small, gentle, and protected, and the water shades through every variation of green and blue.

The hotel restaurant has hosted James Bond (in The Spy Who Loved Me), three generations of European royalty, and a great many film festivals' worth of stars; non-guests can drink at the bar but the dining room is by reservation only and ruinously expensive. The beach itself is public and crowded in August; come early morning or in late afternoon when the day-trippers have left.
