Casa Natale di Pirandello

The birthplace of Luigi Pirandello — Nobel laureate, playwright, and arguably the most significant Italian writer of the 20th century — is preserved as a museum in the Caos neighbourhood between Agrigento and Porto Empedocle. Pirandello was born here in 1867, and the house reflects the provincial intellectual world of late 19th-century Sicily: a middle-class sulphur merchant's home in an olive grove above the sea.

The museum contains manuscripts, family photographs, period furniture, and a small theatre used for performances of his work. In the garden stands the pine tree under which his ashes are buried, fulfilling the instruction in his will — he wanted no funeral, no ceremony, and burial in the countryside near where he was born. The view from the garden, over the rocky coast toward the temple ridge in the distance, is one of the best around Agrigento.
