Torre Carlo V is the old coastal watchtower of Porto Empedocle, built to guard the harbour and the grain-loading coast below Agrigento. It began as the Torre del Caricatore di Girgenti and took its present name after 16th-century restoration under Emperor Charles V.
The tower is a compact stop rather than a long visit, but it gives Porto Empedocle a clear historic landmark and pairs easily with the Pirandello birthplace or the coast below Agrigento.
