The Steinerner Steg — Stone Bridge or, in Italian, Ponte Romano — is a graceful two-arched stone footbridge across the Passirio River in the old town of Merano. It is the oldest bridge in the city, built in the 15th century, and connects the two banks near the Kurhaus. The bridge's narrow arches spring high above the water to accommodate the river's occasional spring floods; from the bridge you can look upstream along the river to the wooded slopes of the valley walls.
The bridge is purely pedestrian and makes a pleasant crossing point between the Passerpromenade on the west bank and the old town on the east. In summer the river below runs a vivid turquoise colour from glacial flour — fine rock powder ground by the glaciers high in the Passeier Valley above. This colour is most intense after rain when water is flowing fast from higher up.
