The Trauttmansdorff Castle Gardens above the town are the main destination — terraced botanical gardens where Empress Sisi once stayed, with views down the valley. Down in town, the Kurhaus on the Passirio riverside is the symbol of the old spa culture, and the riverside promenades are ideal for a long walk. The Gothic church of St Nicholas dominates the old town centre; the Steinerner Steg footbridge nearby is the oldest bridge in the city. Tyrol Castle on the ridge above the town was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol, from whom the whole region takes its name — a short cable car or vigorous walk away.
