Torre Aquila and the Cycle of the Months

Medieval tower at the Buonconsiglio Castle with one of Europe's finest secular Gothic fresco cycles

The Torre Aquila is a square 13th-century tower in the outer ring of the Castello del Buonconsiglio, given over almost entirely to one of the most important works of late-medieval secular painting in Europe: the Ciclo dei Mesi, a series of panels showing the months of the year in scenes of peasant labour and aristocratic leisure.

The tower is accessed separately from the main castle visit, with timed-entry tickets and strict limits on group size (typically 20 visitors at a time). The detail rewards a slow look — a peasant warming his hands at a fire in February, a snowball fight between courtiers in January, a hunt with falcons in May. It is the single most rewarding 20 minutes in Trento.

A story
Painted around 1400 — most likely by the Bohemian artist Master Wenceslas — the cycle shows the twelve months of the year as they were lived in late-medieval Trento. Each panel records a different agricultural or aristocratic activity, with extraordinary attention to dress, tools, snow, and weather. It is one of the very few surviving cycles of its kind in Europe.
