Trento is unusually well positioned for day trips into both the Dolomites and the rest of Trentino-Alto Adige. Bolzano is 40 minutes north by train and is the next major city up the Adige valley — bilingual, German-speaking, and home to the Ötzi Iceman.
Closer in, the lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico to the east are easy half-day swimming destinations. Rovereto (15 minutes south by train) is worth a long visit for the MART, one of Italy's best contemporary art museums. The valleys of Val di Fassa and Val di Non open out into the heart of the Dolomites; Folgaria is the nearest ski area.
