Built in 1615 on what is believed to be the site of St. Francis's family home, the Chiesa Nuova is a small domed church just off the Piazza del Comune. The "new" in its name reflects its position as a 17th-century building among the medieval churches; otherwise it is very much in the tradition of Counter-Reformation Italian church-building.
Adjacent to the church are the remains of the Bernardone family house, including what is said to be the small room where Francis was confined by his father after his conversion. Less of a destination than the great basilicas, but a quick stop on the loop between them.
