This minute medieval oratory, set into a wall opposite the Chiesa Nuova, marks the spot traditionally identified as the stable where Francis was born — his mother, Pica, supposedly retreated to the family's stable to give birth on the model of Bethlehem. A Latin inscription above the door makes the claim explicit.
The interior is a single tiny room with little more than a small altar. Five minutes is enough; combine with the Chiesa Nuova next door.
