Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno is the largest lake on the Italian peninsula south of the Po Valley, and it defines the landscape around Magione. The lake is shallow and warm, dotted with three islands — Isola Maggiore, Isola Minore, and Isola Polvese — and encircled by olive groves, reed beds, and small fishing villages.

Boat services run from several points on the shore, including from Magione's own harbour at San Feliciano. Isola Maggiore is the most visited, home to a small community that maintains a lace-making tradition dating back to the visit of Saint Francis of Assisi in 1211. A cycle path roughly circles the lake — the full loop is about 60 kilometres, though sections on the north shore are less complete. The eastern shore around Magione and Torricella offers good bird watching in the reed beds.

A story
In 217 BC, Hannibal's Carthaginian army ambushed a Roman force under Consul Flaminius along the northern shore of this lake. Roughly 15,000 Romans were killed in what remains one of the worst defeats in Roman military history — so many soldiers died in the shallows that the stream running into the lake is still called Sanguineto, "little blood river."
