Montecolognola

A medieval hilltop hamlet a few kilometres south-east of Magione, Montecolognola is worth the short detour for its views across Lake Trasimeno and the surrounding Umbrian countryside. On a clear day you can see Monte Melino to the south and, with luck, the distant outline of Monte Amiata in Tuscany.

The village itself is small — a handful of stone houses, a church, and the remains of a small castle — but the setting is appealing and it receives very few visitors compared to the more famous hilltowns of Umbria. Drive up, walk around the perimeter, and take in the panorama. The road from Magione winds through olive groves and the landscape itself is worth the twenty-minute drive.
