Laisvės Square is the pedestrianised heart of Panevėžys and the city's main social space — benches, cafes spilling onto the pavement, and a generally unhurried provincial atmosphere. Adjacent to it stands Christ the King Cathedral, a neo-Gothic interwar Catholic church that is one of the larger of its kind in Lithuania. The interior is worth a few minutes; the proportions are ambitious for a city of this size. The square and cathedral together make for a pleasant half-hour circuit and a natural base for exploring the surrounding streets on foot.
